Your boat is your safest haven in Sea of Solitude – nothing can happen to you here. Perhaps that is why art is a successful form of expression to depict what mental illness feels like. It’s different with mental illness – what depression feels like may never be understood by those who haven’t struggled with it themselves and blame the inability to even get out of bed in the worst case to be lazy or a lack of motivation. And even those who have broken a leg can trust that the other person understands that this must be quite painful, even if they have never been in the situation. If you tell someone that they have a headache, you can almost certainly rely on the other person to know what it feels like. Mental illness is not an easy topic to talk about. Unfortunately with little gameplay difficulties. Great visual rendering of the subject of depression, especially when it comes to family. These moments are exceptionally moving and flawlessly capture the desperation, frustration and grief that comes with being alone.Sea of Solitude – Test: Alone with your monsters Pushing away friends and family and isolating herself, Kay struggles to right wrongs. Kay’s behaviour and attitudes earlier in life have left her suffering with the loneliness she now finds herself plagued by.

As she trudges through the snow, Kay is taunted by the mistakes of her past and traumatic moments that have shaped her character. Icy wildernesses act as a metaphor for some of the most desperate moments of Kay’s life. Once Kay finds herself deeper into the strange world she’s lost in, the locations begin to shift from the rolling waves of the sea to colossal looming towers. Sunken cities are bathed in azure ocean waters and, when drained, Kay can explore the architecture of these abandoned towns, reflecting on the memories attached to them. Kay’s journey to restore her world to normality takes her across a variety of landscapes. New chapters bring new threats and, in order to survive, Kay needs to be ever vigilant of her surroundings. This dynamic results in an intense cat and mouse chase vibe, requiring perfectly timed jumps and dashes across patches of open water. Even taking one step into the ocean will alert a monster to a potential kill. Unless Kay’s in the safety of her little boat, the water is a dangerous place. Visuals power the story with the monsters lurking beneath the surface acting as a metaphor for mental health and Kay’s own struggle to keep her head above water. No matter how colourful and calm the city appears, darkness always chases the light away. One bright and colourful to signify the joy in Kay’s life that comes with successfully completing puzzles, unlocking new areas, and advancing through the story.Īnd then there’s the darker side of the world, complete with monsters, pouring rain and thunderous weather. There’s a beautiful mix of serenity and terror, represented by two polar opposite colour schemes. As she moves through the ocean world she comes across a collection of shadowy monsters, all of whom represent a part of Kay’s past repressed memories, regrets and traumatic life events. Kay’s narrative revolves almost entirely around isolation and her struggle with mental health and loneliness. The girl is Kay, and Sea of Solitude follows her as she tries to piece together the dark mystery that is her past. Below her, the waters crawl with deadly monsters. Sea of Solitude opens with a lone girl stranded on a boat above a sunken city.
